Clase and Caemawr Community Carnival 2007carnival queue

This years carnival took place on the 21st July. Rain was forecast and for a while it looked like it was going to hold off but unfortunately the heavens opened, and put a bit of a dampener on what has come to be the highlight of the year for everyone in and around Clase and Caemawr.

Val Lloyd AM opened the activities on the field with a speech. All the usual attractions were present: funfair, dance displays, stalls from both residents and agencies, face painting, games, jazz band and much more. Becky Morcom, one of the volunteers that organised the event said "The carnival was a great sucess despite the rain. The Swansea Silver Rythymaires lead the carnival through the streets of Clase followed by the carnival queens and Kings who all looked great dressed up! There was a large group of people watching the parade before entering the field which is where all the fun was." Every year a parade goes from the Clase Social Club to the primary school field through the streets of Clase, residents cheer on the procession from the pavement and there is always a big group of people at the top shops on Rheidol Avenue waiting eagerly for the gates to open. Becky goes on to say "We had a magic show throughout the day which all the children enjoyed and the BBQ selling cheeseburgers, bacon baps and drinks was, as always, a very popular stall, all proceeds go right back into organising next years event.

dancersA group of local dancers put on a brilliant show undercover when the rain came down, despite the cramped conditions they were able to leap about and perform their routines with grace and professionalism. They received thunderous applause after each dance and you could tell they were really enjoying themselves.

The magic show, provided by Loopy Lews was great, children and adults alike were astounded by their mind boggling and amusing tricks! Everyone was captivated as they turned empty colouring books into a rainbow of colours and made a solid wand turn to the consistency of strawberry jelly.

There was a Health and Wellbeing tent, overseen by some local student health visitors, featuring, amongst other things, a 'stop smoking officer', XL Wales, and The Environment Centre. Free fresh fruit was handed out and enjoyed by all.

This years event was organised by only 6 volunteers! In order for next years carnival to take place the events committee desperately need more members. If you enjoy the carnival and the many other activities in Clase and Caemawr then please help out because unless more people get involved we may not be able to run such large events in the future.
